Silence. From my boat on the Cache River all was quiet in the forest. I imagined a time when a great bird made the trees here tremble. There's something different about the extinct creatures who've departed under our watch. They live on in our collective memory like the ghosts of friends long lost. The Ivory-billed Woodpecker hasn't been seen in nearly 70 years but I still believe. Hidden away in this tangle of woods, river, and marsh, I imagine there's still one nest; an ark carrying the hope of not just one species but two. I listen again. Silence.
